“Chique” Reads: Favorite Family Books
Luckily, we have raised two voracious readers in our house, so there are piles of books in every room. I don’t think a day has gone by in the last 9 years when we have not read a story before going to bed. PJ has started reading on his own, but he still loves to cuddle and listen to us read out loud. Parker on the other hand, devoured all seven of the Harry Potter Books over the summer of 2009 so he has graduated to a much higher level. He can’t wait to settle down in his room and read before turning out the light! PJ’s has now started requesting chapter books like A to Z Mysteries, by Ron Roy, which is great fun. But, I must say sometimes it is hard to put them down after a riveting chapter, yet we must in order to get to sleep on time. Recently, we were cleaning out PJ’s book bin and uncovered some of our old time favorites, which had not been read in a while, so I feel inclined to share with you two of the best. If I were to list our top picks the list would be never ending.
It all started with Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson, an author who is very well known in the UK. If you haven’t read any of her children’s books, you are missing out. We couldn’t get enough of her and now one of our newest favorites is Tyrannosaurus Drip. I don’t want to give it away, but imagine the Duckbill dinosaurs, the peaceful plant eaters , living across the river from the Tyrannosaurus Rex’s, who are the scary meat eaters. A Duckbill mistakenly hatches in the T-Rex’s nest and life gets a little complicated! It is so hilarious and the moral of the story is one too remember. Read it and let me know your thoughts!
My other must read is Piggybook, by Anthony Browne. He most famous for Gorilla and his illustrations are always inspiring! Piggybook is about how a mother teaches her male chauvinist husband and two rude sons what life would be like without her. Honestly, the lesson is in your face but it makes me laugh every time and I could spend hours looking at the hidden messages in the illustrations. You have to read it, if you haven’t already. Would love to hear from you!
We are always looking for new, interesting, intriguing and fascinating books so please share some of your favorites. Here’s to a lifetime of reading and discovery, now that is “Chique”.
