“Chique” Tip: Find Your Inner Beauty

As usual my mother was right!  Ahead of her time as always; I remember like it was yesterday when my mom would come visit me on campus in Ann Arbor, disappointed that I wasn’t wearing any makeup.  I was in my independent academic stage, grungy glamour was my style.  I still considered myself fashionable but in a laid back college kind of way.  “Why aren’t you wearing any lipstick?” she would say with disappointment.  “Oh, mom” was not really the right answer as she knew that my obsession with beauty started with Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers  and eventually grew into a love for cosmetics all the way through high school.  Why did I all of a sudden shift into a different mode?  Still not sure why, but more importantly, I grew out of that stage rather quickly!

Now, nearly 20 years later, it is very rare that I am seen without lip gloss of some sort.  I am a self-proclaimed cosmetic junkie.  I love a natural but polished look for every day.  It really only takes a few extra minutes to put on concealer, mascara and a hint of color on your lips and cheeks.  Putting on makeup to present yourself as your best is simple.  I don’t do it for anyone but myself.  I just feel better and more confident with a touch of color on my face.

Interestingly enough, I just came across an article in the NY Times, which discusses a Harvard study connecting women’s credibility and intelligence with wearing makeup.  Not a deep subject but one that hit home for me.  They also quote Bobbi Brown, who revolutionized the beauty industry, who also believes that the wearing the wrong color can do the exact opposite.

  • Do you spend the few extra minutes putting on makeup in the morning?
  • Do you struggle with finding the right products for your skin tone?
  • Who doesn’t love a new lipstick for a quick pick me up?

As a stylist, I try to embrace my inner and outer beauty and I hope my clients will do the same. My first stop with a client, after a face shape and color analysis, is the Bobbi Brown cosmetic counter, as I know they will not only pick out the best colors but teach my clients how to apply the makeup quickly and effectively. It really doesn’t take that much longer to finish your look with makeup. My clients always leave feeling younger and more radiant.
Thanks Mom for the good advice; turns out you were spot-on all along and now Harvard research proves it!
Until next time, find your inner beauty.
