“Chique” Fitness: Pilates
As some of you know, I am an avid fan of Pilates. I have been teaching for 5 years, but have had a consistent and dedicated Pilates and Yoga practice for nearly 14 years. Recently, readers have been asking me about my fitness routine. Unfortunately, as I gain personal private Pilates clients, my own practice seems to wane.
I am trying to make my own Pilates mat work a priority. Therefore, recommitted to at least a few hours a week, alone on my mat, with my trustee magic circle, 3lb hand weights and a resistance band. That’s all I need for a total body workout, my friends.
I am certified under the Power Pilates method, but have found that my continual inspiration comes from my previous teachers, my yoga practice and finally Brooke Siler of re:AB Pilates. I am an avid fan of her teaching method, her philosophy and her dedication to the practice.
I recommend that all my clients purchase her first book The Pilates Body, which gives a detailed description of the history of Pilates, the philosophies behind the exercises as well as detailed pictures and step by step instructions.
I wouldn’t recommend trying it yourself as so much of Pilates is about the correct body position. So instead, attend a group class, hire a private instructor and then continue your practice at home.
Once you are comfortable with the routine and you only have 20 minutes, stick to the following as described in Brooke’s first book.
1. The 100
2. The Ab series sequence
3. The standing arm series
4. Side kick series
A lot of exercise trends have come and gone, but Pilates has stood the test of time. There is a reason Joseph Pilates “Contrology”, which was developed in the early 1900’s, is still one of the most efficient ways to work the entire body. It creates results. As Joseph once said, “In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body”.
Pilates lengthens and strengthens your muscles, works the core, burns calories and teaches you to use your breath. What more could you ask for in a fitness routine? Now that is “Chique”.
Email me at erika @ urbanchiqueness dot com to inquire about private in home Pilates sessions. You will thank me later!
