Does anyone else have fond memories of Saturday’s at the mall sipping “Orange Julius” drinks? Well, today’s spontaneous post comes from having an abundance of blood oranges that needed to be juiced. Our usual after school smoothie became an experiment on recreating my childhood fave. There are plenty of recipes on-line to choose from and each one included the secret ingredient. Vanilla! Who knew? I could never put my finger on it, but it makes complete sense. Our version is based on this recipe from “Gimme Some Oven”. What can I say, I am a sucker for cute, smart marketing?
Warning, juicing blood oranges can be just as messy as dissecting a pomegranate, but just as satisfying to the palette. I am sure it would be just as delicious with navel or juice oranges, just not as pretty and pink. Enjoy this “Chique” recipe and have a great weekend friends.
Blood Orange Julius
4 blood oranges, juiced
2 cups ice
1/3 cup milk (regular, soy, almond, coconut)
2 Tbsp. agave nectar (honey or sugar)
1 tsp. vanilla
zest of 1 orange
Combine all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth. I used 2% milk today and some left over Simply Orange, but may try it with coconut water next time since that is my usual go to base for most of my smoothies. I am sure the type of milk changes the flavor a bit, but why not experiment! Yields 3-4 smoothies. Enjoy!
